Smøla
North of Kristiansund lies Smøla, surrounded by thousands of islands, islets and skerries. This is the island where sea meets sky – a kingdom of sea eagles and an eldorado for paddlers and anglers.
Brand-new visitor centre
Salmon Center Smøla opened in January 2026 and is a venue for learning, food experiences and reflection on aquaculture, the environment and sustainability. The centre is centrally located at Hopen on Smøla and also has a satellite office at Campus Kristiansund. The visitor centre highlights current topics such as environmental impact, technology, fish health and sustainability.
Through engaging exhibitions and a range of experiences, visitors gain unique insight into what is Norway’s second most important export industry.
RIB tour to a fish farming facility
Join a trip out to a fish farming site and learn about food production in an exciting way. You’ll get a close-up look at how salmon farming works.
The tour begins with an introduction at the centre, followed by gearing up and a ride in an open boat to one of the demonstration facilities – a fast-paced and educational experience in the beautiful archipelago of Nordmøre.
Tours are booked via the website and are suitable for participants aged 8 and up. Trips are available from both Smøla and Kristiansund from May through October, weather permitting.
Visit the visitor centre
The debate around aquaculture is often black and white, and media coverage can give a simplified impression. Reality is far more nuanced. In the interactive exhibition, visitors can explore, test and experience what happens between the extremes. Join a journey that offers insight, surprises and new perspectives on Norwegian aquaculture.
The visitor centre is open to everyone all year round.
