Solrunden is a 27.2-kilometre round trip from cabin to cabin in the Todalen valley, in Aure municipality, with a total of 1,942 metres of ascent spread across three day stages. The hike is graded moderately challenging, and is best done in the season from May to November. Along the way you stay overnight at cabins run by Kristiansund og Nordmøre Turistforening (KNT): Sollia and Storfiskhytta.

Day 1: Todalssetra–Sollia

The hike starts at the restored and well-kept mountain farm Todalssetra. Solrunden follows a forest road for the first few kilometres, until you hike above the treeline and the landscape opens up. From there the route flattens out somewhat, and you cross gentle hills, past streams and lakes, heading towards the KNT cabin Sollia. Before long you get views over the Vinjefjord, and you'll know the night's shelter isn't far off. Just before Sollia you cross a bridge, a good spot for a refreshing swim.

  • The stage is around 6.5 kilometres, the shortest on Solrunden.
  • For information and booking, see KNT Sollia

Day 2: Sollia–Storfiskhytta

On this stage you pass several mountain lakes, Todalsfjell mountain and the Skardsetra mountain farm. Although this is the longest stage of the hike, it's also one of the easiest, since the terrain is good underfoot. Before reaching Storfiskhytta, it's worth a short detour to the Steinhytta cabin in Storlia, which sits in the pass before Storli lake. As the name suggests, there's good fishing in the mountain lakes around Storfiskhytta. Feel free to bring fishing gear — KNT's cabins lend out fishing rods to children.

  • The stage is just under eleven kilometres, the longest on Solrunden.
  • For information and booking, see KNT Storfiskhytta

Day 3: Storfiskhytta–Todalssetra

The final stage runs from Storfiskhytta back to Todalssetra. You continue to follow the marked path over Todalsfjell mountain. The path sees somewhat less use than the two previous stages. On the way down from the mountain, the altitude drops quickly. Be aware that the terrain can be a little steep in places.

  • The stage back to Todalssetra is around nine kilometres.
