About

A guided tour is a great way to see Bryggen! This walking tour begins at Bryggens Museum. Here you can see the remains of the oldest secular buildings and archaeological finds from Bryggen, which bear witness to the international trade that took place in the city's infancy. You will also hear about day-to-day life in medieval Bergen. Outside the museum we make a quick stop next to St. Mary’s Church to look at the nearby medieval ruins.

The tour continues to the Wine Cellar, which was located in the basement of the city’s first purpose-built town hall. On our way there, the tour passes the characteristically colored buildings that make up the harbor front of Bryggen. The houses were rebuilt after a devastating city fire in 1702 and are now listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the Wine Cellar we walk through Bryggen and end up at Schøtstuene - the Hanseatic assembly rooms. Here you will hear more about the merchant society of the Hanseatic League, who gradually from the 14th century took over the trade at Bryggen.

The tour goes partly outside so make sure to have suitable clothing. The cobblestone at Bryggen, and the staircases at the Hanseatic Assembly Rooms will make it challenging to bring wheelchairs and strollers on the tour.
Dogs are not allowed on the tour.
