The journey starts in Bergen every day at 8am sailing northbound with express boat along the coast before heading into the great Sognefjord on your way to Balestrand. On arrival at Balestrand at 11.50 – a village that is a favorite among artists, you will go direct from the express boat and change to a smaller boat that will take you further into the beautiful Fjærlandsfjord before arriving Fjærland.
The narrow Fjærlandsfjord with its steep and forested mountainsides leads you to the edges of the majestic Jostedal Glacier. Along the fjord, there are many hamlets and farms. Most of these farms are deserted, and they now serve as reminders of people's toil and challenges in former times.
The water in the fjord is frequently colored light green because of the glacial melt water. At the head of the fjord, you find interesting attractions such as The Norwegian Glacier Museum and The Norwegian Book Town.
Formerly the only way to travel to Fjærland was by boat, but now highway 5 connects the village to Sogndal and Skei/Førde. There are few roads along the fjord and most of the small farms and hamlets have been deserted.
From the pier in Mundal where the boat arrives, a bus will take you to the Norwegian Glacier Museum where you will have the time to learn about the history of the Glacier. From the Norwegian Glacier Museum the trip continuous with the bus to Brevasshytta Cabin where you get a view of Bøyabreen Glacier from the cabin. There will be a stop at approx. 45 min where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the glacier and buy some local food. We recommend you bring some extra food, as there is not too many options to buy along route.
The bus returns to Fjærland quay, and the sightseeing boat takes you back to Balestrand. Upon arrival at Balestrand, the express boat will take you back to Bergen.
There is no guide on the tour, but the tour is very easy to follow!
