Opening Times

Only guided tours to Trolltunga (1 Oct 2020 - 31 May 2021)
Main hiking season (1 June 2021 - 30 Sept 2021)

About

At the western edge of the Hardangervidda plateau, you’ll find Trolltunga – the most spectacular rock formation in Norway. Trolltunga is a rock jutting into space 700 metres above Ringedalsvatnet lake! The hike through high-mountain terrain up to Trolltunga is long and demanding, but you are rewarded with magnificent views. The trail to Trolltunga, situated at 1180 metres, is signposted. From the main trailhead at P2 in Skjeggedal, the round-trip hike is 28 km with an ascent of almost 800 metres. The estimated hiking time is 8–12 hours. There is an additional trailhead at P3 Mågelitopp. The round-trip hike from P3 Mågelitopp is 20 km with an ascent of about 320 metres. The estimated hiking time is 7–10 hours.

More information about Trolltunga at www.trolltunga.com

Shuttle services connect the town of Odda, P1 Tyssedal and P2 Skjeggedal. There is a shuttle bus with limited capacity between P2 Skjeggedal and P3 Mågelitopp. Signs along the trail to Trolltunga show the remaining distance to Trolltunga and back to the trailhead. 4G mobile coverage on most of the hike.

The hike to Trolltunga is recommended from the beginning of June (depending on when the snow melts) until the end of September. Make a careful evaluation of your own shape and equipment. All nature-based activities are at your own risk. If you are not an experienced hiker, join a guided hike. Guided hikes are offered by Trolltunga Active  and Trolltunga Adventures. From January, guided snowshoe or ski hikes are offered by Trolltunga Active.

1 June–30 September: Guided hiking recommended. Experienced hikers can hike on their own.
1 October–31 May: Guided hiking only.

Start your hike to Trolltunga early in the morning. Starting from September, the hours of daylight are reduced, and the nights are colder. Start hiking before 08:00. (In June–July you can start a little later.)

EQUIPMENT, WEATHER FORECAST AND TROLLTUNGA TRAIL INFORMATION

The weather in the high mountains can change quickly and it is always colder than at sea level. Check the weather forecast.

Do not hike if strong winds, heavy rain or fog is predicted. Rescue operations are triggered by hikers every year. What to bring: hiking boots, additional clothing, rainwear, plenty to eat and drink, a headlamp, a basic first-aid kit, a bivvy. Hiking equipment for rent in Skjeggedal and at Odda Tourist Office.

TROLLTUNGA TRAIL INFORMATION

The Mountain Guards provide updated information about the conditions for the Trolltunga hike on Trolltunga Trail Information (Facebook).

PHOTOS AT TROLLTUNGA

When the weather is nice, there are many hikers in the mountain and a photo queue at Trolltunga. Please keep this in mind when you are taking your pictures. Try to be efficient and limit yourself to two poses. Someone nearby will gladly take your picture – just ask.

HIKING DOS AND DON’TS

Always

Bring plenty of food and drink.
Bring extra warm, windproof and waterproof clothing.
Stay together with your fellow hikers – never leave them on their own.
Help keep our mountain wilderness pristine! Please carry all your garbage back, discard it in the rubbish bins in the parking lots.
Your campsite and toilet visits must be downhill from trails and well away from streams.

Never

For safety reasons, don’t operate drones in the hiking areas.
Never attach stickers onto signs or information boards. This information is vital to all hikers!
Don’t light campfires between April 15th and September 15th.
Don’t pollute our streams!
