Byrkjelo is part of Breim, a broad valley stretching from the Jostedal Glacier to Lake Breimsvatnet. Here you will find lush farmland, a unique mix of food culture, festival life and access to spectacular nature. The iconic mountain Eggenipa has put the village on the map, but there is much more to discover.
Nature and Landscape
You know you have arrived at Byrkjelo when you see Eggenipa towering above the village – the iconic mountain that has become a landmark for the whole village. At Lake Bergheimsvatnet you can stop and capture the peak reflecting in the water. On clear days you can also see the Myklebust Glacier, which is part of the Jostedal Glacier National Park.
To the south, Våtedalen opens up like a fairy-tale valley towards Sunnfjord and Sogn. The river sneaks thrpugh the valley floor while the mountains rise steeply on both sides. In summer you share the valley with grazing goats – watch out and let them cross the road at their own pace.
Activities
Byrkjelo and Breim are paradises for anyone who wants to combine outdoor activity with peaceful village life. At Utvikfjellet you will find a family-friendly ski resort – perfect for a day on the slopes. In summer you can cycle or hike to mountain farms such as Byrkjelostøylen, Myklebuststøylen or Støyvastøylen.
At Byrkjelo Camping you can let the children play and cool down in the outdoor pool. You can pitch a tent or rent cabins as the perfect base for great hikes in the surrounding area. If you enjoy fishing, there are plenty of opportunities in the lakes and rivers nearby.
