The tapestry series "Åsmund Frægdagjeva" by Ragna Breivik. A unique textile exhibition!

For the very first time, the "Åsmund Frægdagjeva" series are displayed at Bryggens Museum – ten magnificent tapestries created by Norwegian textile artist Ragna Breivik. The tapestries were woven over a period of more than 25 years and are based on the medieval ballad of Åsmund Frægdagjeva, who rescues Princess Ermelin from trolls in Trollebotn. Parts of the series have previously been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. Now, the public will have a rare opportunity to experience Ragna Breivik's masterpieces in medieval surroundings at Bryggen.

A Tribute to Ragna Breivik and the Art of Weaving
The exhibition highlights both the "Åsmund Frægdagjeva" tapestries, the work of Ragna Breivik and the art of weaving itself. Norwegian artist Gerhard Munthe, who created the sketches for the tapestries, has received significant attention for his collaboration with Breivik. However, it is Breivik's own contribution – her ability to combine traditional weaving techniques with modern artistic expressions – that makes the works so unique. Inspired by Norwegian nature, folk art, and folklore, she created a visual language that makes the tapestries both decorative and narrative.

Tales in Thread
The tapestries are not only visually stunning but also tells the story of Åsmund Frægdagjeva in a unique way. Here, Ragna Breivik delves into Norwegian cultural heritage and Gerhard Munthe's world – into medieval poetry and storytelling traditions of old ballads and sagas. The exhibition also showcases other works and aspects of Breivik's artistic practice. Like the Åsmund Frægdagjeva series in particular, they represent an artist who stands firmly on her own and masterfully balances tradition with innovation.Take advantage of this rare opportunity to experience Breivik's art and learn more about the history behind the work of Åsmund Frægdagjeva and the art of weaving.
