The case shocked the entire local community and became a highly publicised murder case in Norway. Nesset initially admitted to the killings but retracted his confessions before the trial. What happened remains a mystery: why would Nesset want to kill all these people?
The book The Unlikely Serial Killer: Arnfinn Nesset and His 31 Confessions by author Simen Sætre is an attempt to solve the mystery. Adresseavisen gave the book a six out of six rating, writing that it does not get better than this in documentary literature.
