The impressive steel bridge stretching across the waterfall offers a spectacular view and a unique experience of the rushing water – especially when the river is at its fullest. Here, you stand in the mist of the falls, surrounded by thundering water cascading down the mountainsides.

From the bridge, you can continue along Fossestien, a beautiful hiking trail that follows the protected waterways of the area. This hike brings you close to the grandeur of Sunnfjord’s nature, with waterfalls, rivers, and idyllic landscapes waiting around every corner

Naustdalfossen – the salmon’s battle against the current

Along the Nausta River, one of Norway’s most sought-after rivers for salmon and sea trout fishing, lies the impressive Naustdalfossen. This waterfall, together with Hovefossen, is part of the 12.4-kilometre stretch of salmon-bearing river. Here, you can witness the spectacular sight of salmon leaping upstream on their way to their spawning grounds, as the river roars powerfully through the landscape.

Osfossen – a paradise for anglers

As the last waterfall in the Gaular watercourse before Gaula flows into Dalsfjorden, Osfossen is a guaranteed hotspot for catching salmon. Especially popular among anglers, it is an excellent place to master the art of fly fishing. Here, you’ll find thrilling fishing experiences and breathtaking scenery while watching salmon fight their way up the rushing waters.

Styggelifossen – dramatic and spectacular

Despite its name, Styggelifossen is anything but ugly – in fact, it is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Sunnfjord. With an impressive 115-metre drop, it plunges into a dramatic gorge, allowing you to feel the raw forces of nature up close. The hike down to the waterfall takes about two hours through wet and challenging terrain, with some climbing required.

Vallestadfossen – nature’s power and history combined

Along Riksveg 13 in Råheimsdalen, you’ll find Vallestadfossen, a magnificent waterfall with a 90-metre drop. Not only has this waterfall amazed visitors with its powerful flow, but it has also been an important resource throughout history. In the past, its water power was used for mills, sawmills, and electricity production, and today, a small hydropower plant still operates here. Vallestadfossen is one of the most famous waterfalls in the Gaular watercourse, making it a perfect stop for those looking to experience both natural and cultural history.
