Beyond the Usual is for travellers who already know the classics, or simply prefer finding places that not everyone visits. With a rental car, you have the freedom to explore the Stavanger region at your own pace. The programme below shows how a five-day self-drive journey could be put together, taking you from Stavanger and the Ryfylke coast to Utstein, Egersund, Eigerøy and Jøssingfjord. The route, accommodation, activities and duration can all be tailored to your preferences.

Accommodation: Hotel Victoria Stavanger, Utstein Kloster Hotel or Trekronå, and Grand Hotel Egersund
Transport: Rental car

Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and get curious

Arrive by air or road, pick up your rental car and drive to Stavanger. Check in and explore the city at your own pace.

Day 2: The road less travelled

Hit the road and explore the Ryfylke coast. Drive through small coastal communities and alongside fjords, stopping at a local café or farm shop along the way. Visit Utstein Monastery, Norway’s best-preserved medieval monastery. End the day with a special overnight stay at Utstein Kloster Hotel or Trekronå.

Day 3: Southbound, Egersund and Eigerøy

Head south towards Egersund. Discover the rugged coastline around Eigerøy Lighthouse and Hagavatnet by e-bike. Afterwards, relax and recharge in the Egersund steam sauna before spending the night at Grand Hotel Egersund.

Day 4: Hidden gems and coastal roads

Visit Trollpikken, one of Norway’s quirkiest natural landmarks, before continuing to the historic coastal village of Sogndalstrand. Travel onwards to Helleren beneath the dramatic rock overhang at Jøssingfjord. On your way back towards Egersund, drive the historic Tronåsen road.

Day 5: Until next time

Drive back to Stavanger Airport and enjoy the scenery one last time along the way.
