Discover Bergen beyond the postcard. This walking tour dives into the city’s soul - its proud identity, international influences, and the stories that make Bergen unlike anywhere else. The perfect tour for curious travelers who want meaning, not just monuments.
Bergen might belong to Norway on the map, but historically culturally it has been a European enclave nestled within the inhospitable Norwegian nature. On this 90-minute walking tour, we guide you through the city’s layered history and vibrant present. Starting at the Tourist Information Center, we set off into streets where every corner has a story.
The first place we wander through is Bryggen, the UNESCO-listed wharf that speaks of Hanseatic trade and Bergen’s European influences. From there, we continue along Øvregaten and Lille Øvregaten, the oldest streets in town to reach the Cathedral - where we speak about Magnus Lagabøte and we point out a "gift" left by the colonial power struggles a few hundred years ago. Through Skostredet we head toward Festplassen and Byparken, to discuss Norway’s long struggle for independence and its National Romantic movement - which is intrinsically tied to Bergen . And at the end, we invite you to share your impressions in our Hyttebok: a tradition that turns your experience into part of Bergen’s ongoing story.
