Go on the walk whenever it suits you, but in winter conditions with snow and ice it can be challenging. The terrain is not suitable for skiing. The path is well marked all the way, with the number 4 on some of the marker posts.
Whether you start in Blikrabygda or Gjerdesdalen, there is a tractor track leading up to Friarane. Since time immemorial, there has been a path connecting these two localities. It is signposted from both sides and features information boards.
On the ridge halfway along the route, there are some large boulders known as Friarane. The name comes from the story that a girl and a boy met there, and later got married.
The walk continues over Låvene and up the scree slope. It’s an exciting climb, and well equipped with ropes to hold on to. There are splendid views from the ridge towards Brennesteg.
From Buskar, if you’re tired, you can head down to Blikra and end the walk there. But if you fancy a longer walk, simply carry on. The path passes by Himmelriks-hidleren. This is a good spot for a break, especially if the weather is bad. The walk continues towards Stemvatnet, and then up to Vardafjellet. From Dumoskar, you can take a detour to the summit of Aksla (793 metres above sea level), which is the highest point of the walk. From here, you can see both Utsira and Folgefonna. From Aksla, you’ll need to walk a short way back along the same route, and then down the pass. It’s steep there, but well secured. Continue north to the cabin at Sletthaug. From Sletthaug, there is a tractor track down to Aurdal. You can also start in Aurdal and finish in Blikrabygda or Gjerdesdalen.
The entire walk is 13.3 km and takes approximately 5–6 hours. It is marked in red. However, you can break it up and walk sections of the route. Much of the route offers splendid views of the village and a wide variety of scenery. Everyone is also encouraged to sign the Nutafant guest books located at the nutane. Enjoy the walk!
