Rampestreken – viewpoint above Åndalsnes

Rampestreken is a striking viewpoint perched 537 metres above the Romsdalsfjord, reached via the well-marked Romsdalstrappa from Åndalsnes. A steel platform extends out from the mountainside, with the final metres suspended in the air, offering panoramic views over the fjord, valley and surrounding peaks.

The hike

The hike follows the Romsdal Stairs, a popular mountain trail combining natural terrain with stone steps built by Sherpas from Nepal. The ascent takes around 1.5 hours at a steady pace.

Some sections include exposed roots and rock that can be slippery, and handrails are installed where needed. Sturdy footwear is essential. Stone benches and viewpoints along the way offer natural places to pause and enjoy the scenery.

Nesaksla and the Romsdalsgondolen

From Rampestreken, you can continue the hike for another 15–30 minutes to the summit of Nesaksla. Here you’ll find Eggen Restaurant and the Romsdalen Gondola, which offers a scenic and comfortable ride back down to Åndalsnes.

How to get there

You can reach Rampestreken in two ways:

  1. Hike up via the Romsdal Stairs from the centre of Åndalsnes
  2. Take the Romsdalsgondolen to the mountain and walk down to the viewpoint (approx. 15 minutes)

If hiking, start below Nebba and follow the clearly marked trail towards Nesaksla. The first section has handrails and no stairs, making it accessible for most visitors.

Who is the hike suitable for?

The hike suits most visitors who are comfortable with a steady uphill walk. You can set your own pace, and several viewpoints provide natural stopping points along the way.

The trail is accessible year-round. In winter conditions, crampons or are recommended, as parts of the path may be icy. During periods of (deep) snow, it may not always be possible to reach the viewpoint or the top of the mountain, Nesaksla.

Rampestreken is very popular in summer, and queues can occur. The trail is also used by hikers returning from Romsdalseggen and Via Ferrata, which can add to traffic.

Parking

Parking is available at the start of the Romsdal Stairs and at Rauma Cultural House, about a five-minute walk from the trailhead.
