The trail around Mosvatnet is a popular destination near Stavanger city centre. It is a lovely walk suitable for the whole family, taking around 40-50 minutes.

Bustling bird life

Although Mosvatnet is located a short distance from the city centre, the lake offers wonderful nature experiences and is a popular area for walking and jogging. The lake is shallow and nutrient-rich, and it has a vibrant birdlife. As many as 140 different bird species have been recorded. Approximately 50 of these species nest in connection with the lake, and the large nesting population of great crested grebes is particularly well known. In winter, there are large numbers of diving ducks, such as goldeneyes and tufted ducks, and occasionally long-tailed ducks. Along the water's edge, well hidden in the overhanging scrub forest between Stavanger Camping Mosvangen and Stavanger Art Museum, several rare bird species have found a home. There is a sculpture park at Stavanger Art Museum – feel free to stop by.

Mosvatnet – Stavanger nature reserve

From August 2025, Mosvatnet was officially protected as a nature reserve. The lake, located just a stone's throw from Stavanger city centre, is one of the city's most popular hiking areas – and now its unique flora and fauna are secured for the future. Birds, bats and a rich variety of species make their home by the water, and as a visitor, you can experience nature up close.

For you as a visitor, it has no major significance. Mosvatnet remains a great place to walk, run, cycle or just enjoy a quiet moment by the water's edge. Here are some tips on what you can and cannot do in the reserve:

You can:

  • Walk, jog or cycle on the popular trail around the lake
  • Pick berries and edible mushrooms in season
  • Walk your dog (always on a leash)
  • Go ice skating when the ice forms in winter

This is not allowed:

  • Swim or fish in the water
  • Pick flowers or collect insects
  • Lighting fires or barbecues
  • Pitching tents or photo tents
  • Using boats, model boats or drones

Mosvatnet is a green oasis in the middle of the city – a perfect place to relax in nature, whether you are a local or a visitor.
