This distinctive rock formation has been given an astonishing number of nicknames by both children and adults. Here we meet Pac-Man, Habnafjedle, Steinbiten (the catfish), Kvalen (the whale), Hvalkjeften (the whale's jaw) – the same rock, but seen through many different eyes!

A destination for adventurers of all ages

This is a destination that combines low accessibility, beautiful surroundings and a good dose of humour. And that is precisely why it has become a cult favourite in Egersund.

The trip is about two kilometres there and back, and is suitable for most people – from families with children and grandparents to eager little adventurers who love rocks with personality. The trail starts from the same car park used for the trip to Hagavatnene. A simple search for ‘Hvalkjeften Egersund’ on Google Maps will take you straight to the right place.

From the car park, follow the trail that leads out on the west side. It was created to provide access to the cabins in the area and is therefore even and easy to follow. After a short distance, you will come to a crossroads with a sign pointing you towards the rock. If you lose the trail, don't worry – the large, gaping rock formation is visible from a distance away.

It is rare for a rock to receive so much attention, but the Pac-Man rock is the kind that inspires creativity. Depending on where you stand, how the light falls, and what you – or your children – associate the shape with, the rock can resemble:

  • Pac-Man – the classic game character who voraciously “eats” his way across the screen
  • Whale's jaw – an enormous mouth that seems to gape over the landscape
  • The catfish – with its large, round “jaw”
  • The whale – a stone that looks like a sea creature on land
  • Habnafjedle – the more traditional local name

This is precisely what makes the trip extra fun for children: they can decide for themselves what the stone resembles and perhaps give it their own name.

Stop for a snack and photos

The rock formation itself is located on a small hill and offers a fine view of the surrounding terrain. The area invites both play and discovery – there are small knolls to climb, exciting rocks to explore and plenty of space for a snack break.

This is also a great place for photos, as the rock is as photogenic as it is quirky. Many people take the mandatory Pac-Man photo, where the rock “eats” a person, a jacket or a packed lunch.
