Solheimsdalen - Grovatnet - Tysnessåto

The car park in Solheimsdalen is one of the most popular
starting points for exploring the mountains of Tysnes, summer
and winter alike. The walks go through birch woods up to
above the tree line, where heather and juniper dominate
and where you get the feeling of being on a high mountain
plateau. At 753 metres, Tysnessåto is the highest summit in
Tysnes, with great views in all directions.
From Grovatnet lake, you can continue on towards Breistølen
summer pasture farm.

Good advice

The path is wet in places, so wear appropriate
footwear.

Lenght

24 km there and back, 4 hours' ascent.

Altitude difference

280-753 metres.

The walk starts with an easy climb on a tractor road for about
3 km before continuing on a path to Grovatnet lake. The path
can be wet in places. At Grovatnet lake (468 metres), the path
veers to the left following a stream up a valley, then through
birch woods to Såtefjellet mountain where a gently sloping
path takes you to the foot of Såto. From here, you can see the
other mountain massif on the island, with the summits
Etlådnefjellet (737 metres) and Hovlandsnuten (727 metres).
The final ascent to Tysnessåto is a bit gentler than the walk
via the Malkenesdalen valley.

At 753 metres, Tysnessåto is the highest summit in
Tysnes, with great views in all directions.

Alternatively, you can take the path down Malkenesdalen
valley and back to Solheimsdalen.
