The Sherpa stairs provide excellent access to Vardafjellet, a popular hiking area in Haugesund. The route starts by the high-rise blocks on Fjellvegen and follows the terrain up towards the summit.
The stairs were built by hand by Sherpas, using around 400 tonnes of stone. The entire route from Fjellvegen to the summit is approximately 415 metres long. Although the walk is short, it climbs steadily, so you’ll quickly get your heart rate up.
At the summit of Vardafjellet, 122.7 metres above sea level, you can enjoy views of Haugesund, the coastal landscape and the areas surrounding the town.

How long is the walk?
The route from Fjellvegen to the top of Vardafjellet is approximately 415 metres. The walk is relatively short, but involves a steep climb.
How challenging is the walk?
The walk is of moderate difficulty. The Sherpa steps make the route easy to follow, but due to the steep climb and the many steps, you should expect to get your heart rate up.
Good walking shoes are recommended, and please be aware that the stone steps can be slippery when wet.
Can I walk to the Sherpa stairs from Haugesund town centre?
The Sherpa stairs are within walking distance of Haugesund town centre. From Haugesund Tourist Information at Haraldsgata 131, it is approximately 2 kilometres to the start of the Sherpa stairs. Allow around 25 to 30 minutes to walk to the start of the steps.
This makes Vardafjellet an easily accessible hike, even for those staying in a hotel in the town centre or visiting Haugesund without a car. You can start your hike right in the town centre, walk to the Sherpa Steps and continue all the way to the top of Vardafjellet.
Can the hike be extended?
You don’t have to turn back once you reach the top. From Vardafjellet, you can continue along the trails in the area and combine the Sherpa Steps with a longer walk.
Among other things, it’s possible to walk on towards Djupadalen, a popular outdoor recreation area with an extensive network of walking trails.
Where can I park?
If you’re coming by car, you can park at the hiking car park at Mosskarsvegen 1, by the entrance to the hiking area. From here, walk on to the start of the Sherpa Steps on Fjellvegen.
Are there any toilets?
There are no toilets at the Sherpa stairs or at the top of Vardafjellet. The nearest public toilet is at Stemmen in Djupadalen.
Where is the nearest shop?
The nearest supermarket is SPAR Sørhaug on Fjellvegen, very close to the start of the walk.
