Hareid lies at the outer edge of Hareidlandet, where fjord, mountain and sea come together. Start the day with views from Melshornet (668 metres above sea level), then head down to the sea. At Overåsanden you'll find one of the finest beaches in the area, right next to the national monument commemorating the Battle of Hjørungavåg. In the coastal village of Brandal, you can discover a rich polar history at the Ishavsmuseet Aarvak Museum. The landscape is open and accessible, leaving room for both short walks and longer adventures.
Hareid, the municipal centre, is a natural transport hub in southern Sunnmøre. The ferry to Sulesund takes about 23 minutes and runs frequently, the express boat takes you straight to central Ålesund, and the Eiksund Connection links the town to Ørsta and Volda without a ferry crossing. The surrounding islands are also close by. This makes Hareid a great base for exploring the whole region – from the bird island of Runde to the dramatic peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps.
Hareid also has an active local community, with events, sports and culture throughout the year. In the town centre you'll find several cosy cafés, including Millennium and Mjøl og Meir. The latter also serves delicious coffee from the Jacu coffee roastery. These are great stops for a bite to eat before continuing your journey of discovery. Coastal culture lives on here, close to the sea and the people who make their living from it. It's a place where you easily get close – to both nature and everyday life.
