The Right of Access grants us the privilege to explore and enjoy our magnificent nature, whether along the coast, in the forests, by the rivers, or on the mountaintops.

With this freedom comes responsibility. We encourage everyone to show respect for nature and all who traverse it.

Leave no trace

Do not litter in nature, avoid harming or disturbing wildlife and plants, and respect any restrictions on access in the area.

Access in Protected Areas

The Right to Roam also applies in protected areas. However, some areas have special rules regarding access and activities. In Fjord Coast & Sunnfjord, you will find

Fishing and Catching

Fishing is a popular activity along the coast and in the many rivers and lakes of the region. Remember to pay the fishing fee and obtain a fishing permit before setting off on your fishing adventure!

Birdlife

The coastal birdlife is rich and diverse. In spring, tens of millions of birds arrive in Norway to nest and lay eggs. Outdoor activities and human presence can put pressure on these vital habitats. Be mindful and show consideration!

In seabird reserves, access is restricted from 15 April to 15 August.

Wild Reindeer Areas

Fjord Coast & Sunnfjord are home to two of Norway’s 24 wild reindeer areas. The Førdefjella reindeer area is located between Sunnfjord and Nordfjord, within the Naustdal-Gjengedal Landscape Protection Area. The Sunnfjord reindeer area is Norway’s westernmost, featuring an elongated, coastal mountain landscape south of Førdefjorden and Jølstravatnet. Before visiting these areas, familiarise yourself with the recommended guidelines: Wild Reindeer Code of Conduct.

Dog Leash Regulations

From 1 April to 20 August, all dogs must be kept on a leash.
