Trollstigen will open as normal in 2026, and you can once again explore the iconic hairpin bends between fjord and mountains. Plan your trip safely with updated opening hours, tips on when to go, and advice on how to get the most out of the experience – whether you’re arriving from Åndalsnes or Valldal.

Trollstigen reopens spring 2026

The entire iconic mountain road will once again be accessible between May/June and October/November, depending on weather and conditions. Stay updated for information about the exact opening date in spring 2026.

Useful to know:

  • The Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen is always closed in winter and normally open from mid-May to October/November, depending on when winter returns.
  • Even though the season is expected to start as usual, be aware that weather and mountain conditions may affect the opening and cause temporary closures.
  • Start your trip early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a quieter experience.
  • The road is narrow and winding – large motorhomes or caravans should plan well and be prepared for meeting oncoming traffic.
  • Whether you arrive from Åndalsnes or Valldal, the drive to the viewpoint offers panoramic views of the waterfalls and the legendary mountain road.

Gudbrandsjuvet

Gudbrandsjuvet

Gudbrandsjuvet is a 5 metre narrow and 20–25 metre high ravine, easily accessible from main road route 63 between Valldal and Trollstigen.

How to experience the Trollstigen plateau even when the road is closed

Trollstigfoten – situated at the barrier used for closing the road in winter – can still be reached by foot, bike or car from Åndalsnes. From there, you can look up towards the architectural ramps at the viewpoint, Stigfossen waterfall and the road’s famous bends. On the way to Trollstigfoten, in Isterdalen valley, is Trollstigen Camping and Gjestegård, which not only offers accommodation but also has a café and a souvenir shop.

If you want to walk the Kløvstien path to Trollstigen, Trollstigfoten is one of two starting points for the walking route that runs on the opposite side of the valley. The route offers views directly across to the road's iconic hairpin bends. You can reach the viewpoint on Trollstigen plateau in about 1–3 hours, depending on how far down the valley you start the hike. The hike is medium-hard, so don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes! Guided tours are also available through the Norwegian Mountaineering Centre, Norsk Tindesenter.

Drive or cycle from Valldal - The Adventure Valley up to the viewpoint on the Trollstigen plateau. The route leads you past Gudbrandsjuvet gorge – itself an architectural viewpoint where you can experience steep mountainsides, the river and the gorge at close range.
