Flørli Tourist Station is situated right in the middle of the Lysefjord in the small village of Flørli. In the 20th century, this was a bustling power station village, but as the power station became automated, many people moved away. Today, the village has just two permanent residents and no road access. With magnificent views of the fjord and dramatic mountains, this is a peaceful and idyllic place to spend a few days.
A beautiful ferry trip across Lysefjorden takes you to the quay in Flørli. From here, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the tourist centre, which is situated at the top of the village, roughly 50 metres above sea level. The walk is easy and follows a gravel path from the quay.
Flørli Tourist Station is a child-friendly cabin and features, amongst other things, a playroom. You’ll also find a cot and a high chair available to borrow here.
Hikes and activities
Flørli is particularly famous for the Flørli Staircase – with its 4,444 steps, this is the world’s longest wooden staircase! The staircase starts right down by the fjord and is practically a must-do when you’re in Flørli.
If the Flørli Staircase does prove a bit too long, however, the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has marked out a one-hour circular route that takes you up just 700 of the steps.
The Flørli cliff hike is also well worth a go! This is a lovely 4 km circular hike that starts down by the fjord and follows a steep path with beautiful views over the fjord. Stop off at Kalleliklumpen, often called ‘mini-Trolltunga’.
Flørli Tourist Station forms part of the spectacular route around Lysefjorden, and there are signposted paths leading to the tourist cabins: Skåpet and Langavatn.
Do you need a wash after a long day’s hike, or are you simply looking for a bit of luxury? Along the fjord, you’ll find a hot tub, an outdoor shower, a sauna and two outdoor baths!
Food and accommodation
In summer, the old power station down by the fjord is open to the public. Here you’ll find a café where you can order breakfast, amongst other things, and concerts and exhibitions are held on the premises.
Flørli Tourist Station is an unstaffed DNT cabin with no food store, so you’ll need to bring your own food. The cabin has electricity and running water and has everything you need to prepare meals: kitchen equipment, a hob, a fridge and a freezer. Duvets and pillows are provided, but you’ll need to bring your own bed linen or sleeping bag liner.
