Cycling tours on narrow roads with little traffic
Cycling tour starting from Judaberg
Take the express boat from Stavanger to Judaberg on Finnøy. There are several route options here. You can cycle around the whole island, or you can cycle around the southern or northern parts of Finnøy by crossing the island roughly in the middle. The ride around Finnøy is about 20 kilometres. On Finnøy, you can see the beautiful medieval Hesby Church, large greenhouses where tomatoes are grown, stunning scenery, fjords, islands and mountains. At Søre Vignes, you’ll find the remains of a gun emplacement from the Second World War, and from time to time, a walking theatre performance is staged here, offering glimpses of the war years. Return to Stavanger by express boat.
Cycling tour starting from Nesheim, Sjernarøyene
Take the express boat from Stavanger to Nesheim in the north of Sjernarøyene. Cycle the Sjernarøy round trip via Bjergøy, Aubø and Eriksholmen to Kyrkjøy. Here stands Sjernarøy Church, a wooden church dating from the 17th century. Outside the churchyard, you’ll find a memorial stone to the author Alfred Hauge, who was born on Kyrkjøy in 1915. Do take a detour to Ramsvig Trading Post, where there’s a summer restaurant in July.
Continue the trip across Tjul to Talgje (north), where there is a lovely hiking area and fishing opportunities by the former marble quarry. The area is protected as a nature reserve. There are good views here, and you don’t have to climb high to see islands, fjords and mountains.
The route continues to Helgøy for the ferry to Finnøy and on by express boat to Stavanger, or by express boat directly to Stavanger. You can also start and finish at Helgøy, and the round trip across the islands is 35 kilometres. The Sjernarøy Round is signposted with cycle signs.
