From Holmen, the hike takes you through a lush and varied landscape towards Lake Ørsdalsvatnet. Although the starting point and Galtadalen are at roughly the same elevation, the trail crosses higher ground along the way, giving you some ascent before descending towards the lake.

Through the woodland towards Ørsdalsvatnet

From the farm at Holmen, follow the tractor road alongside the barn and continue on the marked trail. Do not follow the road along the river. The terrain alternates between woodland, uncultivated land and more open areas, with views towards Ørsdalsvatnet as you continue.

Kaurebu, Bjerkreim's day-trip cabin, is also located in this area. The network of trails continues towards Galtadalen and the bathing spot by Ørsdalsvatnet.

Galtadalen and the beach

At Galtadalen, the trail takes you all the way down to Ørsdalsvatnet. A small beach makes this a pleasant destination and a natural place to stop for a break. On warm summer days, you can also go for a swim.

Return to Holmen along the same route. This is a good choice if you are looking for a relatively short and easy nature hike without climbing a mountain summit.

Getting there and parking

From the E39, turn off at the sign for Gjedrem and follow the road towards Holmen 45, 4387 Bjerkreim.

At Holmen, there are three designated parking options: in front of the barn, down by the river and in the signposted parking area. Park only in designated spaces and be considerate of farming activities.

The hike starts on the tractor road alongside the barn, not the road along the river. Follow the trail markings into the hiking area.

If you arrive by bus, get off by the bus shelter on the E39 at the turn-off for Gjedrem and Holmen and walk from there to Holmen.

Stay safe and show consideration

The hike passes through woodland, uncultivated land and farmland, and the trail can be wet and slippery after rain. Wear suitable footwear and follow the marked trails. Livestock may be grazing in the area, so keep your distance, keep dogs under control and close gates behind you.

If you plan to swim in Ørsdalsvatnet, check the conditions before entering the water and always supervise children.

Take all rubbish with you and show consideration for nature and farming activities.
