The hike to Mjåvassknuten is one of Rogaland’s hidden gems. The minerals extracted from the mountains were carried down the steep slope from the mines at the summit. There are still several traces here of the former mining operations. A fantastic, but challenging hike.
Hiking guide to Mjåvassknuten
You can park at Hovland in Ørsdalen. Start the hike by crossing the suspension bridge. Then turn left. Walk steeply up the ravine for about 4.5 kilometres. Follow the path as it levels out slightly through the marshes before the final ascent of around 5 kilometres. From here, it’s about 300 metres of gentle uphill walking to the cairn at Mjåvassknuten. There are magnificent views from the summit. Return down to the junction. Here, follow the path to the right towards Vassbø, passing Holmvatnet and continuing on towards Juvvatnet. You then follow Hellersbekken on the north side. The path is somewhat marshy, and you cross the stream via an old stone bridge. From there, simply follow the tractor track down to Vassbø. Follow the track back to the car park at the Ørsdalen mines. Please be mindful of grazing animals.
Getting to Mjåvassknuten
Turn off the E39 at Vikeså. Follow the RV 503 through Vikesdal to Øvrebygd and Malmeim. Take the RV 117 along the shore of Austrumdalsvatnet to Stavtjørn. Drive through the tunnel, and you’ll be in Ørsdalen.
Plan your long mountain hike
Mjåvassknuten is a long and demanding hike. Check the weather, season and local conditions before setting off, and bring a map or a downloaded route, warm clothing, food and plenty to drink. Set off early, allow plenty of time before dark, and be prepared for changing weather and visibility. Turn back if conditions deteriorate.
