Moster Amfi

At Moster Amfi, you can experience the story of when the Christian law was introduced in Norway, and visit Olav Tryggvason’s church – Moster Old Church, one of the oldest stone churches in the country.

According to Snorre’s Kings’ sagas, Moster on Bømlo was the first place Olav Tryggvason came ashore when he arrived in Norway in the year 995 to claim the throne and introduce Christianity.
A few years later, in 1024, King Olav the Holy came to the Moster Assembly and presented the Christian law for the first time in Norway – the law that replaced the old Norse system and laid the foundation for our modern legal structure.

Here at Moster, this history has been brought to life through Moster Amfi and the Moster Play, which since 1984 has told the story of the royal visits and the Christianisation of Norway.
In 2016, the play was renewed with the premiere of “I slik ei natt” (On Such a Night), directed by Svein Tindberg and produced by Bømlo Teater.

Moster play

The two Moster plays depict dramatic turning points in Norwegian history – when Moster was at the centre of major historical events.
For a few hours, the audience is taken back in time and witnesses how these great societal changes also left their mark on individuals.

National history is brought to life on historic ground by Bømlo Teater, which has staged these historical plays since 1984.

“Kristkongane på Moster” (The Christian Kings at Moster) by Johannes Heggland premiered in 1984 and was performed every year until 2013, and again in 2015.
“I slik ei natt” (On Such a Night) by Svein Tindberg premiered in 2016. For more than 30 years, Bømlo Teater has gathered nearly 100 actors and musicians on the outdoor stage at Moster Amfi for these powerful performances.

The play was performed again in 2024 as part of the “Moster 2024” anniversary celebration.
