Osternes Fortress – War History and Scenic Views in Fitjar
Osternes Fortress is a powerful cultural monument from World War II, beautifully located by the Selbjørnsfjord in Fitjar. Here, you can walk in the footsteps of soldiers from the 1940s and explore old gun positions, bunkers and command posts – all with a panoramic view of the ocean and the surrounding islands. A visit to the fortress offers fresh air, beautiful scenery and a strong encounter with history.
Trail Description
The hike starts at the parking area in Tveit. Follow Osternesvegen north until you reach the farm Stokken. Here, turn right and follow the road down to Grønevik – a small bay where the Germans had a quay during the war. After visiting Grønevik, walk back about 300 metres and turn right again towards the command post. This is a great spot for a break – with views, history and seating areas.
From here, continue past the remains of the old commander’s house and on to the southernmost gun emplacement. From there, you’ll have a wide view across the Selbjørnsfjord. Return the same way to the parking area.
