The Broken Chain is a powerful memorial to the 123 people who lost their lives in the Alexander Kielland disaster in 1980. The monument is situated in a spectacular location by the sea at Smiodden in Kvernevik, overlooking the North Sea.
The sculpture, designed to resemble a broken chain link, was created by the artist Johannes Bloch Hellum and unveiled in 1986. It is made of copper, weighs around five tonnes and measures six metres in length. Just below the monument, you will find plaques bearing the names of all those who lost their lives.
‘Broken Link’ is both an important cultural monument and a place for reflection, offering visitors an insight into one of the most significant events in Norwegian oil history.
