Svelgen and Bremanger offer some of the most spectacular nature experiences in Western Norway. Here you will find Hornelen – Europe’s highest sea cliff with its own Via Ferrata, the westernmost glacier in Norway, and the beautiful beaches Grotlesanden and Vetvika.
Nature and Landscape
The landscape of Bremanger is defined by dramatic contrasts. Hornelen rises 860 metres vertically from the fjord. Not far from Hornelen lies Grotlesanden, a gem of a beach at the outermost tip of Bremangerlandet, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Vetvika was long a secret known only to locals in Bremanger. Today, word is spreading about this hidden cove with its white sand, azure-blue sea and steep cliff walls. The hike to get there is a longer walk, which means you may have the beach all to yourself.
The Ålfot Glacier is one of the westernmost and most ocean-influenced glaciers in the country. Here you also find a truly unique shelf landscape of Devonian sandstone – over 200 shelves from Svelgen to Hyen, formed from 400-million-year-old mountain remnants.
Activities
Bremanger has many marked hiking trails, from easy family walks to challenging mountains. The hike to the top of Hornelen takes about four hours from Hunskår and rewards you with a view that takes your breath away. For even more excitement, you can try the Hornelen Via Ferrata – climbing Europe’s highest sea cliff with the ocean right below you.
Gjegnen, the highest mountain in Bremanger, offers a demanding hike for experienced mountaineers, while the Ålfot Glacier provides opportunities for glacier walking. At the Deer Farm (Hjortegarden) in Ålfoten you can feed deer and experience wildlife up close.
Culture and History
Bremanger is rich in history. The Vingen rock art site, one of Northern Europe’s largest collections of rock carvings, is a short trip from Svelgen. Here you will find over 2,000 rock carvings up to 6,000 years old – a journey back to the Stone Age. Guided tours are arranged throughout the summer.
The Tongane coastal fort on Rugsundøy tells the story of wartime history in the area, with barracks, gun positions and a large cannon overlooking the sea. Ålfoten Church, dating from 1610, is the oldest church in Bremanger municipality, with walls that tell of lives and fates through hundreds of years.
