Play as a Viking: Test Hnefatafl at Nordvegen History Centre

Get to know the board games of the Viking Age at Nordvegen History Centre! Hnefatafl is a board game in which you help a Viking king escape enemy attacks by reaching a safe corner route. Ask your host for an introduction and challenge your family to a round. Maybe you have what it takes to become a master of the Vikings' favourite game? It's also possible to buy the game to take home if you get hooked.

Learn more about runes - the Vikings' script

Did you know that the Vikings believed runes had magical powers? Visit the round table in the hall at Nordvegen History Centre and learn how to write your name with these ancient characters. Perhaps you can also create a secret message that only real Vikings can understand? A fun and educational activity that takes you right back to the Viking Age!

Fun with picture bingo at Avaldsnes!

Make your visit to Avaldsnes extra fun with picture bingo! Pick up a bingo booklet from the reception at Nordvegen History Centre and set off in search of motifs inside the centre, out on Leikvollen and around St. Olav's Church. It's an exciting activity that the whole family can take part in - who can fill in the bingo booklet first?

St. Olav's Church is situated next to Nordvegen History Centre at Avaldsnes. It is strategically positioned on a hilltop, from where it was easy to watch over ships travelling through the Karmsundet strait.

Take the family on an exciting journey back in time to the Viking Age at Avaldsnes! The Viking Hunt is a fun rebus that takes you through the historic area, where you have to solve puzzles and collect letters for a secret solution word. For example, do you know how many legs Sleipner had, or what the Vikings' characters were called? Along the way, you'll learn exciting facts and history as you explore the area. Can you crack the code and find the solution? The Viking hunt is perfect for young and old Vikings on expedition!

Leikvoll - a Viking-inspired playground

Right next to Nordvegen History Centre you'll find Avaldsnes Leikvoll, a playground inspired by Norse mythology and the Viking Age. Here, children can play their way through history and explore exciting details from the world of the Vikings. If you visit the playground during the history centre's opening hours, you can pick up your own picture bingo to make your visit even more fun and educational.

Avaldsnes Leikvoll is a playground at Avaldsnes, Norway's oldest royal seat. This is a special park that has both artistic qualities and invites to play and learning.

Play and learn like a real Viking at Vikinggården

At Vikinggården at Avaldsnes, history comes alive through play and creative activities for the children! With a workbook in hand, they can try their hand at everything from making spinning toys and pinecone animals, to writing with runes and finding exciting things in the area. Children can experience how Viking children used their imagination and their surroundings to create, play and explore. Please note that the Viking farm is only open during the summer (16 June - 14 August).

At The Viking Planet in Haugesund city centre, Viking history comes alive in an exciting and modern way! Visitors of all ages can explore old Viking ships and excavations using touch screens and interactive stations. Kids can take part in fun competitions, quizzes and activities - maybe they'll win a prize? And don't forget to stop by the popular selfie station! The whole family can take fun photos with digital Viking effects.
