Karmøy is a place filled with history, nature and coastal culture. The island offers everything from Viking history to white beaches and charming small-town life. Here is a three-day travel guide that takes you through the highlights, from Avaldsnes in the north to Skudeneshavn in the south.

Avaldsnes → Visnes → Åkrasanden og Åkrehamn → Sandve →

32,2 km — 45 minutes
Duration: 1 day

To reach the island of Karmøy itself, you must cross the Karmsund Bridge, which spans the sound that gave Norway its name: Norðrvegr – Nordvegen – the road to the north.

The first stop is Avaldsnes, Norway's oldest royal seat and a central part of Viking history. Here you can experience the past at the Nordvegen History Centre, Viking Farm and Olavskirken Church. You will gain an insight into who the Vikings were, what they believed in and what everyday life was actually like in the Viking Age.

A short drive away is the Visnes Mining Museum, a place with a completely different but equally fascinating history. Visnes was once Northern Europe's largest copper mine and Norway's largest workplace. Here you can learn about the mining adventure that put Karmøy on the map. Did you know that the copper for the Statue of Liberty in New York actually comes from here? There is a small replica of the statue on the site, which is a perfect photo opportunity!

Once you are in Visnes, stop by Fransehagen Bistro for a bite to eat (check the opening hours in advance). The bistro is named after Charles de France, the man who started the mining adventure on Karmøy.

After a cultural refill and a bite to eat, the journey continues south on the island. On the way, be sure to stop by Åkra Sjømat at Amfi Åkrehamn to pick up some delicious, fresh seafood to enjoy as evening falls. The shopping centre also houses Haugli Bakery, perfect for those who want something sweet on the way.

From Åkrehamn, or Åkra as the locals say, the journey continues to Sandhåland. Here you will find the Panoramahyttene, reflected in the sea. With their large windows leaning towards the sea, the view is just as magical on a sunny day as on a windy day. This is your first overnight stop on the trip, and you are guaranteed an experience you will never forget!

Sandve → Åkrasanden og Åkrehamn → Skudeneshavn →

24,4 km — 30 minutes
Duration: 1 day

Start the day quietly with coffee and sea views before driving to Åkrehamn. Here you will find Åkrasanden, one of Norway's most beautiful beaches. It is perfect for a refreshing dip, a stroll or just watching the kite surfers dance across the waves.

When you get hungry, try the famous Kanuttapølsa sausage from the sausage stand at Esebjør 11, a local classic that has become famous far beyond the borders of Karmøy.

Continue south on the island and join Saltråk on a SUP tour. Cathrine offers guided SUP tours in Skudeneshavn and the surrounding area, an activity that is suitable for most people in normal physical shape. She takes you on safe, calm paddling trips between islets and skerries – a great way to experience the coast up close.

After some fresh sea air and activity, it's time for a little comfort. Check in at Gamlekaien, a charming guesthouse where the manageress will give you a warm welcome. As evening approaches, enjoy a delicious dinner at Havn restaurant or Smiå Bistro, both known for their good food and relaxed atmosphere. End the day at Lundins Kulturpub before strolling back to Gamlekaien for a good night's sleep.

Skudeneshavn →

0 km — 0 minutes
Duration: 1 day

Spend this day in Skudeneshavn! Take your time strolling through the white wooden streets and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Stop by Lundins Kafé or Verdens Minste Kafé for a coffee and perhaps something sweet to eat. In summer, visit Skudeneshavn Museum, a museum rich in content that gives you an insight into the town's rich history.

After a stroll, it's a good idea to try out the town's sauna, Bade-Olena. If you are feeling particularly brave and want to channel your inner Viking, you can combine this with a refreshing dip in the harbour.

If you are not quite ready to go home yet, you can extend your stay with a night at Havn Hotell or Lundins Hotell, both located in the centre of Skudeneshavn and offering a true coastal idyll.
