Værlandet and Bulandet are connected by the Nordsjøporten road, which is not only vital for transport and communication out here, but also offers a spectacular journey through the island kingdom. The Sørværet Nature Reserve teems with wildlife, and if you’re lucky, you might spot seals, otters, eagles and deer.
This archipelago is Norway’s westernmost inhabited community. The islands are a popular destination for those who enjoy cycling, paddling, fishing or hiking. Bulandet is Norway’s westernmost active fishing community, consisting of 365 islands with around 260 inhabitants. The local museum Bulandet – Past and Present offers a fascinating insight into everyday life and fisheries in Bulandet. On Værlandet, about 200 people live, with fishing and aquaculture as the main industries. Tourism and the export of high-quality natural stone (greenstone breccia) to Italy are also rapidly growing sectors.
Cycle across a string of pearls
The road between Værlandet and Bulandet is a popular cycling route. On this 11-kilometre ride, you’ll cross a string of bridges, passing art installations, charming seahouses and narrow straits. From the six bridges that link the islands together, there are magnificent views of the sea and islands. The bike ride can also be combined with island hopping to some of Norway’s westernmost islands.
The local grocery shops, Joker Værlandet and Joker Bulandet, are located at either end of the island chain. Joker Værlandet is easily accessible when you arrive by ferry from Askvoll, while Joker Bulandet is a natural stop if you’re island hopping between Solund and Bulandet. Bikes can be rented and returned at either shop – giving you the choice of cycling one way or round trip.
Værlandet and Bulandet also offer a variety of hiking trails. The Nordsjøløypa (North Sea Trail) is one of the longest, with a mix of flat terrain and summits. Follow the signs along the way and enjoy viewpoints that are well worth the effort once you reach the top. Would you like a guided tour?
