Volda – fjords, mountains and vibrant village life

From characterful villages to the lively centre of Volda and the village of Grodås, the area offers a varied mix of fjord landscapes, mountain adventures and local culture. Explore small museums, discover local history or head out on foot, whether you are travelling solo, with friends or as a family.

Challenge yourself on a demanding mountain hike surrounded by the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, or choose an easier family-friendly walk in Bjørkedalen, a village known for its boatbuilding traditions and viking ship replicas.

With four fjords, five lakes and countless mountain trails, Volda is made for exploring. The town of Volda is also home to a lively student community, with studies ranging from teacher education and film and animation to nature-based tourism. Cultural events and festivals, including Dei Nynorske Festspela and Indiefjord, add to the creative atmosphere.

Local flavours and attractions

In the centre of Volda, Brør Bar & Bistro is known for quality ingredients, creative flavours and its own brewery.

A rather unusual attraction can be found in Austefjorden, home to one of Europe's largest populations of breeding toads. When the Kvivsvegen road was built, special measures were introduced to protect them, including dedicated tunnels beneath the road. At the nearby rest area, you can also meet a four-tonne toad statue.

Rural traditions remain an important part of the local identity. Museums and cultural attractions across the area introduce you to everything from sculpture and historic buildings to the region's lighthouse history.

Volda through the seasons

Summer brings long days, hiking and plenty of opportunities to explore the fjords and mountains. Winter has a character of its own, with several ski centres and good opportunities for winter activities.

As in many coastal areas of Norway, the weather can change quickly. Bring warm clothing and be prepared for shifting conditions – whatever the season.
