The 1700 islands, islets, and skerries that make up the Solund archipelago out in the west at the ocean’s edge are a popular destination for everyone looking for exciting experiences in nature.

1. Island Hopping by the postal boat

Join the local postal boat on an island-hopping adventure to Solund, Bulandet and Værlandet. Discover Norway’s westernmost islands and get close to the spectacular landscape of thousands of islands, islets and skerries. The local postal boat connects the island communities by delivering mail and transporting residents from island to island. The final stop on the regular route is the idyllic fishing village of Gåsvær, where you can go ashore. Gåsvær is a former trading post, and you’ll be welcomed by local hosts. After the stop at Gåsvær, the boat continues north to Bulandet in Askvoll municipality. There, you can explore the islands on your own before returning to Hardbakke.

3. Lighthouse safari to Utvær

You can’t get further west in Norway than Utvær. This remote outpost offers both fascinating history and breathtaking natural surroundings. The view from the lighthouse is truly spectacular. As you walk around the island, you can see the ruins of a chapel that was relocated in 1718 and even marks from sword sharpening. But the most captivating thing is the raw nature and the sea – at Norway’s very edge.

The lighthouse at Utvær rises 31 metres above the rock and its beam shines 45 metres above sea level, flashing every 30 seconds and reaching 35 km out into the North Sea. For decades, it has been the first sign of land for seafarers arriving at night.
And did you know? Utvær Lighthouse is featured on Norway’s 50-kroner banknote.

4. Cycling in Solund

Solund offers fantastic conditions for cycling adventures. Bring your bike along on island-hopping trips – the ferries and boats that take you between the islands are an experience in themselves. Cycle north along the idyllic Liasundet, pass charming villages, and watch the sun set over Lågøyfjorden. From Hardbakke, you can cycle west to Daløy and take the quaint ferry to Haldorsneset. From there, continue south to Nåra, and make a lunch stop at Havkroa café in Hjønnevåg, which is open during the summer.

5. Pollatinden

Pollatinden is the second-highest mountain in Solund and is often called “The Queen of the Island Kingdom”. Whether the name comes from its ranking as the second-highest peak in the municipality, or from the fact that Queen Sonja herself has climbed it several times, no one knows for sure.
The mountain rises 541 metres above sea level and offers fantastic views over Norway’s westernmost islands. The hike is moderately challenging, with steep sections over rocky terrain, and takes around 2–3 hours round trip.

6. Ramnenipa

At 232 metres above sea level, Ramnenipa offers fantastic views over Hardbakke and Solund. The trail is graded green, making it suitable for both children and adults. The most common starting point is by the football pitch in Hardbakke. From the shop, walk up Storehaugen and through the street until you reach a gravel road. Turn left and follow the path along the football field, where you’ll find the trail leading all the way to the top.
The round trip takes about 1 hour, and you can ascend or descend from either the south or north side.

Ytre Sula is home to a number of small, idyllic village communities: Kolgrov, Straumen, Hjønnevåg, Ytrøygrend, Kverhella, Trovåg, and Nåra.

In Ytre Sula, you can stay at Solund Rorbuferie and enjoy good food at Havkroa. There’s also a grocery store in Nåra.
