Sand has 1100 inhabitants and is the administrative centre of Suldal municipality. The small village has excellent communications, with express boats and frequent bus services. There is also a tourist information office and a guest harbour.

Explore the town centre

In the village you will find a cultural center, a salmon studio at Sandsfossen falls, Høsebrua bridge, the main facility of Ryfylke Museum in Nesasjøhuset, a good selection of shops, a hotel, cabins for hire, a gallery and popular cafés.

Every year Sand hosts "Ryfylkedager", a traditional market with activities for the whole family, as well as the popular "Møgedalsmarked" at Bergekrossen. Every other year a colourful historical play is performed.

Hiking and fishing

There are several well-marked hiking trails of varying difficulty starting from the town centre.

Suldalslågen river, renowned among anglers for its salmon, empties its waters into Sandsfjorden just by Ryfylke Fjordhotell, which sits at the end of the main street.

Historic cemetery

The church has a historic cemetery, where you will also see some English names, of aristocratic families that discovered Suldal in the 19th century, bought fishing rights on the river and returned every year.
