Are you planning to spend your autumn break in the Haugesund region? Then you have a lot to look forward to: exciting places to stay, fun activities and cultural events! In week 41, 6–10 October, it is autumn break in the Haugesund region and the rest of Rogaland and Vestland counties.

Exciting museums and historical experiences

The autumn holidays are also a great opportunity to combine play and learning. There are several museums in our region that are open during the holidays. At Nordvegen Historiesenter, you can learn about the Vikings and take part in fun activities. During the autumn holiday, they are open on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

For more Viking history, we recommend a visit to The Viking Planet in Haugesund city centre, a digital and interactive museum that is suitable for the whole family. The Viking Planet Haugesund is open on 6, 9 and 12 October from 11:00 to 17:00.

Avaldsnes is home to the Nordvegen History Centre, St. Olav’s Church and the Viking Farm. Explore the cultural landscape on your own or join a guided tour.

The Viking Planet is a digital museum in the centre of Haugesund that tells the local Viking history. Suitable for both children and adults.

Visnes Gruvemuseum (Mining Museum) tells the story of Norway's largest copper mine. The museum is open every day during the autumn holidays from 12 noon to 4 pm, and here children can try out what it's like to be a miner. In addition to visiting the museum, children can also go on an adventure hunt, try the zip line, or test out the mining playground here.

A visit to Haugesund Art Gallery, the Sildemuseet museum in Dokken and the Vindafjord Museum are also perfect holiday activities. In addition to its exhibitions and activities, Haugesund Art Gallery is organising an ARTung workshop on graffiti for young people aged 12-19, and an ARTung drawing studio with Evan Hikmat on 11 October.

The art museum, within walking distance of Haugesund city centre, gives you older art and contemporary art in one place!

Vindafjordmuseet

The Vindafjord Museum - Haugalandmuseet

Vindafjordmuseet is located just northeast of Vikedal town center, in Vindafjord municipality. Here you can get an insight into the town's history and local traditions. The Museum focuses on local craft and business history, with special traditions related to shipbuilding.

At the Sildemuseet museum in Dokken (open on 6, 9 and 12 October), you can make paper flowers and contribute to a work of art at the museum during the autumn holidays. Here you can unleash your creativity and make a beautiful flower, either for yourself or for the artwork in the boathouse. A fun activity for young and old alike. There is also a children's play corner where you can try on clothes from days gone by or build a boat that you can “launch”. And if you're strong enough, maybe you can lift 20 kilos in the pulley frame?

Autumn holidays at the cinema

Or would you rather hide away in the darkness of the cinema with a good film during the holidays? Edda Kino is holding a children's day on Wednesday 8 October, and there will be daytime screenings every day from Monday to Friday throughout the week. Before the films start, there will be fun activities for the children. You can find the full programme here. Karmøy Kino, Tysvær Kino and Skakke Kino will also be showing exciting films throughout the autumn holidays. Go ahead and check out the cinema programme!

Fun with theatre

The cultural calendar also has a lot to offer during the holidays, and for children, the Riksteatret's ‘Hundrevis av barn i vill kamp’ (Hundreds of children in wild battle) at Tysværtunet, Children's Day at Edda Kino and Lørdagssnop (Saturday Snack) at Festiviteten stand out. Perhaps this autumn holiday is the time to take your children or grandchildren to their first theatre experience?

For adults, the cultural calendar also has plenty to choose from. At Quality Hotel Maritim, Music & Wine with Knut Bjørn Asphol, Sider Maker Dinner with Eiane Gard and Maritim Live with six different comedians are all being held during the autumn holiday.

Enjoy a coffee break for young and old during the autumn holidays

The autumn holidays are the perfect time to treat yourself to a coffee break or two. At Hos Carlos Kaffebar in Gamle Slaktehuset, you will find a menu that suits both children and adults – plus they may well serve the best coffee and delicious hot chocolate in town! If you're looking for something sweet, Jåblom Bakst Cupcakehuset and Lutchfood are just the right places – with delicious cupcakes and doughnuts that both young and old will love. Or how about a visit to Sabi Sushi, Tre Stuer Kafé or Dattera til Lothe for a delicious lunch? Remember that it's okay to indulge a little extra during the autumn holidays!

Perfect bathing temperature throughout autumn

When the weather is rough, it's good to know that there's plenty of fun to be had indoors. How about a trip to Tysværtunet swimming pool (open every day during the autumn holiday) for a lovely, heated swim? Here you'll find both a regular pool and a children's pool, and you can also try out the water slide or sauna at the swimming pool. Combine your visit with a bite to eat at GP Kafé.

Explore nature – suggested trips for the autumn holidays

The autumn holidays are also the perfect time to get out into the fresh autumn air. Pack your backpack and put on some good shoes – there are lots of opportunities for great hiking experiences! Explore the day trip cabins in the region, or head to well-known hiking destinations such as Himakånå, Kyststien, Ryvarden Kulturfyr, Boknafjellet or Alvanuten. If you're heading to Djupadalen, you can visit Haugesund Tourist Association's climbing jungle – great fun for children (and playful adults). Spend your autumn break outdoors in the fresh air and fill it with wonderful nature experiences – just remember to pack something to eat in your backpack!

Karmøy is a paradise for disc golf enthusiasts, with courses in both Liarlund and Blikshavn. Disc golf is easy to get started with – all you need is a disc and you're ready to go! In the south of Karmøy, you can also hire SUPs from Saltråk in Skudeneshavn or surfboards from Raw Ocean Lodge in Sandve. The autumn holidays are the perfect opportunity to try something new, perhaps with your family or good friends.

Combine the fresh autumn air with the warmth of a sauna! There are several places in the Haugesund region where you can enjoy a steamy sauna followed by a refreshing dip in the sea. In Skudeneshavn, you can visit Bybadet Bade-Olena, which has both a sauna and a jetty. On Røvær, they have their own sauna right next to Røvær Kulturhotell. Would you like to enjoy the sauna with a view of the fjord? Then Heit Åkrafjorden Sauna is the place for you – here you can relax in the warmth with a spectacular view.

If you would like to visit Røvær during the autumn holidays, take the boat from Haugesund city centre (Indre kai). The trip takes about 25 minutes. Stay at the island's only hotel, Røvær Kulturhotell, and visit Røvær Havbrukssenter, where you can learn more about Norway as a maritime nation. The hotel restaurant is open Thursday to Sunday during the autumn holidays, with a special game night on Saturday (table reservations required at post@rovarkulturhotell.no).

During the autumn holidays, you can join a RIB trip to the salmon farms on Thursday (9 October) and Sunday (12 October), departing at 11:30 and 14:15. If you are interested in learning more about lobster fishing, you can sign up for a free introductory course on Saturday and Sunday (register as soon as possible at post@rovarhavbrukssenter.no, note: limited places available).
